Here’s what’s coming out this weekend…
Man of Steel (Anna’s Team)
Uh oh! Reviews are not so good. Rotten Tomatoes is at 58%. MetaCritic is at 55, though most of the reviews are either “positive” or “mixed” (there’s only 3 “negative” reviews). Turns out Zach Snyder cannot be trusted no matter what he does, even if Christopher Nolan produces the movie.
The thing to note here is that, movie-goer reviews seem extremely positive. The Audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is 82% liked it, and User Reviews on MetaCritice were 58 positive to 5 negative. Never underestimate the fanboy. I think people are still going to go to this in droves. My coding teacher was going to a 2am screening last night1, he bought his tickets like a month ago. It’s still a big deal. Look, its not like these are After Earth level reviews, I think these reviews are just (barely) good enough that everyone’s still going to go see this.
Plus, why wouldn’t people want to see an “impossibly” handsome man who’s “so ripped, he’s nearly shredded”? A movie that inspired these two tweets from my favorite gay, Superman biographer:
Words & phrases that do NOT occur in my just-filed http://t.co/aCZoI4nVLE MAN OF STEEL review: “damn” “shoulders for days” “daayyuuum”

Also didn’t mention how sight of Cavill in suit elicted audience laughter. Not laughter of derision, but that of appreciative incredulity.

My favorite part about this second tweet is that I got the joke immediately, because I was sitting next to two women2 who, when Superman first comes on screen, burst out laughing and said “look at his thighs!” So, yeah. At the very least, there’s an incredibly good looking man in this movie.
Prediciton: $125 million. $375 million total.
The Bling Ring (Liz’s Team)
This weekend, besides being about Superman, is the weekend Hermoine blows up. Emma Watson has a bit part This Is The End that looks to have show-stealer potential. Then, she stars in The Bling Ring, a movie that looks like it’s pretty good (Rotten Tomatoes is at 60%, MetaCritic scored it 69 with zero bad reviews.) and has certainly been getting a lot of buzz (it premiered at Cannes earlier this summer, and that means stuff right?).
The Bling Ring is only opening in 5 theaters this weekend, so its not going to be anything big. However, it will open nationwide next week (Rule Alert: and from there it will only count for 6 weekends). I’m going to say it’s going to be a pretty small opening and a reasonable take for an independent movie. I think looking at something like Lost in Translation, another of Sofia Coppola’s movies, is a good comparison, but that feels a little high. Maybe Spring Breakers, is more apt.
Prediction: $135k opening. $18 million total.
1I REALIZED THAT I MENTIONED A PERSON WHO CODES AND FANBOYS WITHIN 2 SENTENCES, SO I JUST WANTED TO POINT OUT THAT MY CODING TEACHER SEEMS LIKE A REALLY COOL, DOWN TO EARTH GUY, who is not a nerdy fanboy.
2 ANNA AND LIZ
Enjoy the weekend!!
Sumofale!
